Autohemotherapy is a procedure in which a small amount of a person’s own venous blood is drawn and then reintroduced into the body through an intramuscular injection.
The technique was first described in 1911 by French physician Dr. François Ravout and has since been explored in various integrative and complementary health settings.
The approach is based on the concept that reintroducing a small amount of the body’s own blood into muscle tissue may stimulate the body’s natural immune response. When the blood is injected into the muscle, the body recognises it outside of the bloodstream and responds by activating immune processes.
Within complementary health practices, this response is believed to encourage the activity of certain immune cells, including macrophages, which play a role in the body’s natural defence and clean-up systems. These cells help identify and remove unwanted particles, damaged cells, and other foreign agents.
While individual experiences may vary, some practitioners use autohemotherapy as part of a broader wellness approach aimed at supporting the body’s natural defence mechanisms.
To help ensure the procedure runs smoothly, we recommend the following before your appointment:
Avoid consuming alcohol for 72 hours prior to your session
Ensure you are well hydrated by drinking plenty of water beforehand
Eat normally prior to your appointment unless otherwise advised
Good hydration can make the blood collection process easier and more comfortable.
Some individuals report noticing changes after their first or second session. However, for those wishing to explore the therapy as part of a longer wellness approach, many practitioners recommend a structured treatment course.
A common approach is a 12-week programme with weekly sessions, allowing the body time to respond and adjust between treatments.
As with any wellness practice, responses can vary from person to person.
Individual treatment: £55
Course of 12 session: £540
Autohemotherapy is not yet widely known in the UK, so many people are curious about the kinds of experiences others have had with this therapy. Below are a few examples shared by clients who incorporated the treatment into their personal wellness routines.
Elizabeth is in her mid-60s and has worked as a professional carer for over 20 years. In the last five years she also became the primary carer for both of her parents, which involved a significant amount of physical and manual work.
Over time she began experiencing persistent lower back discomfort, and getting out of bed each morning had become increasingly difficult. She also noticed stiffness in her hands, which would often remain in a claw-like position for several minutes after waking up.
After beginning autohemotherapy sessions, Elizabeth reported that within the first couple of treatments she felt a noticeable improvement in both her back discomfort and hand stiffness. She felt that continuing with regular sessions helped her maintain the physical strength and mobility needed to support her caregiving responsibilities.
Leticia, in her late 60s, decided to include autohemotherapy alongside regular vitamin injections as part of her personal wellness routine, with the aim of supporting her overall vitality.
After starting the treatments, she reported feeling more energetic, with an improved sense of wellbeing and confidence. Over time, she also chose to work with her healthcare provider regarding her long-term use of medication for depression.
Following a period away from treatment, Leticia experienced an accident that caused a back injury and difficulty walking. When she returned for treatment, she initially found it uncomfortable to lie down during her session.
However, shortly afterwards she reported feeling significantly more comfortable moving around, even expressing surprise at how different she felt compared with when she arrived. She described the experience as one of the most noticeable shifts she had personally felt following a session.
Charles is a bodybuilder, so his training routine places significant physical demands on his body. For several years he had been experiencing persistent shoulder discomfort, which often affected his training and recovery.
In April 2023, we discussed the potential benefits of autohemotherapy as part of a wellness approach to support his body’s recovery, and he decided to give it a try.
After his second session, Charles reported that his shoulder discomfort had completely disappeared. Encouraged by this experience, he continued with weekly autohemotherapy sessions for three months.
More than a year later, Charles has shared that the shoulder pain has never returned, and he has been able to continue his training without the issue that had previously been troubling him for years.
Autohemotherapy is offered as a complementary wellness therapy, and individual experiences can vary. While many clients report positive outcomes, results cannot be guaranteed and the therapy is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure medical conditions.
